California Superbike School Philippines, now on its 7th year this February with Wheeltek and Kawasaki

The California Superbike School is returning to Philippine soil this coming Feb.15-16, 2020 at Clark International Speedway with different students, new levels to reach, and a full two days of intense motorcycle training.

The California Superbike School (CSS) made its Philippine debut last February 2014 at the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga with 63-70 students from all over the Philippines and 12 of the most experienced coaches of the school’s Australian branch who rigorously trained the students.

Safety briefing before actual bike drills in the program

Keith Code founded the CSS in 1980 with one goal in mind: to teach motorcycle riders to drive better, safer, and faster. Since its debut, it has trained over 150,000 riders worldwide.

In the country, there is no one better equipped than Tuason Racing to run the Local leg of the California Superbike School. TRS is the Philippines’ premier racing school and is a 21-year mogul in the business. Together with Dave Howitt, one of the few who have attained a level 4 master coaching status, TRS will again host the CSS Philippines this coming Feb.15 to 16 with the support of Wheeltek and Kawasaki Philippines on 2nd year.

New students will start with the level 1 riding class on day one and the level 2 riding class on day 2, focusing on throttle control, proper steering techniques, determining reference points on the track, racing lines, and correct braking. The graduates of last year’s CSS will be climbing to levels 3 and 4.

Level 3 will mostly cover proactive technical points of riding, body positioning, and a unique drill called “Attack Angles” which will give the riders a better approach to cornering. Level 4 takes a completely different turn; it is custom-built to suit the specific needs of every rider, building up any weaknesses found after taking Levels 1-3.

The all-in fee for this training is P85,000. It includes a theoretical riding lecture at the beginning. While on the track, the participants will have six highly trained instructors to ride with them to provide a more in-depth coaching style and to point out necessary corrections in their riding habits.

The Giti-Formula V1 Challenge Season 3 Primer

The Formula V1 is back again in the new decade as the series kicks off in March 2020. So before the action starts up again let’s review the fundamentals of the series.

THE CAR

Formula V1 is the Philippines’ homegrown formula car series and the beginning of the country’s motorsports rebirth. The series also runs mandatory specifications for the engineering, which in turn prioritizes the skills of the drivers. With every team competing on the same level, the competition reduces cost and eases the weight of maintenance.

The semi-monocoque Formula V1 cars are produced by West Cars in Suzuka Japan. The Car uses rear wheel drive, mid engine layout with an open cockpit. It uses a 5 speed H pattern short shift and no driving aids such as ABS or Traction Control, making it one of the purest forms of motorsports available for intermediate level racing. The car can reach up to a top speed of 220kph and can achieve 0-100kph in 4.5 seconds. The Car comes with in-car brake bias for the front and rear disc brakes and a 1NZ 1.5Li (110HP) Toyota engine.

THE SCHEDULE

Day 1 of a Sprint Race consists of two 20 minute practice sessions–unofficial and official–before scrutineering and Qualifying Time Trials.

Day 2 consists of three 12 lap races. Race 1 grid position depends on QTT results, Race 2 grid position will be based on the results of Race 1–but with a reverse grid for the top four cars.

POINTS SYSTEM

  • 1st – 20
  • 2nd – 15
  • 3rd – 12
  • 4th – 10
  • 5th – 8
  • 6th – 6
  • 7th – 4
  • 8th – 3
  • 9th – 2
  • 10th – 1

With the stakes running highest at the end of the season with a double points final race. The championship is up in the air till the final checkered flag!

With numerous accidents of varying degrees, mostly stemming from avoidable mistakes, TRS hopes to put their support forward and create safer drivers for a better Filipino future.

This year, Tuason Racing is celebrating its 20th year with a bang as 2019 has been one of the best years for the company. Looking at some of their most popular events, it is indeed a proof why Tuason Racing is still running and now, the longest-reigning company in the local motorsports scene.

The 2019 business calendar of the company has a climax of a week-long series of events, car exhibits, seminars, launch, and other programs that coincided with the expertise of the company.

Here are some events that brought color to Tuason Racing’s 2019 business calendar:

It was a very challenging event that required intense planning and organization for the company. Overall – it was superb!

TOYOTA VIOS RACING FESTIVAL

For this season, Vios Racing Festival has been better with the introduction of Autocross Challenge to the event. It made the festival more inclusive and accessible to Filipinos by opening more slots to enthusiasts. Organising this event for Toyota along with Toyota Racing School, has always been a step forward towards Tuason Racing and Toyota Motor Philippines’ shared vision of strengthening and supporting the growth of motorsports in the country.

FORD DRIVING SKILLS FOR LIFE

Ford Philippines has worked together with long-term partner Tuason Racing to bring the 12th year of Driving Skills for Life Program back on the road this year. Formula V1 is the first homegrown formula car program in the country and the flagship series in the rebuilding of Philippine motorsports. It’s a “spec” formula meaning every team runs exactly the same vehicle–that makes V1 racing cost-effective, easy to maintain, and, competitive and exciting because driver skill becomes the most important aspect–and with a dream race in Suzuka against the V1 champions of Japan awaiting the champion, the drivers definitely delivered a lot of highly skilled and epic racing all season long.

The Giti-Formula V1 Challenge is presented by Phoenix Pulse Technology and Tuason Racing. Sponsored by Giti Tires Philippines, West Racing Cars, OMP, AEG Powertools, Phoenix Accelerate, Rota Wheels, Oakley, Eurasia, FamilyMart, and Don Papa Rhum.

The leaders of both the AM and Pro Classes announced their intent at the first round in BRC on May 18. Alex Brown shocked everyone by sweeping the first three races of the season in the AM Class, while Cleanfuel’s Ryo Yamada took home 48 points versus Estefano Rivera’s 45 in the very competitive Pro Class that saw them share the podium with Growl-Thule’s Jussi Hoikka, Ensport’s Stefan Ramirez, and Frontrow’s Raymond Ronquillo.

JULY: Round 2 at Clark International Speedway

With new sponsors, Eurasia Motorsport, announcing the extra prize of a Formula Masters test drive in Sepang, the stakes were high as the action moved to Clark on July 20-21. Alex Brown continued his dominance in the AM Class but had his first taste of elimination in the weekend’s second race as he spun off track–in the same race, Phoenix’s Young Driver Raffy Rabe showed his amazing progress as he clinched a first-ever podium in third. Meanwhile, OTR’s Red Diwa added to his second-place finishes and steadily built his points haul.

In the highlight of the weekend, Rivera executed a last-minute pass on Yamada in wet conditions after exchanging the lead several times in the final race of the round. That left just a single point between them in favor of the Japanese driver.

OCTOBER: Round 3 at Clark International Speedway

The heart-stopping moment during race 7

With double points on the line, Round 3 on October 19-20 got off to an explosive start as five cars collided off the starting line in the opening race. With his car suffering the worst damage, Alex Brown was transported to the hospital and cleared to recover with no major injury on the same day.

The other drivers involved were also unhurt because aside from the Formula V1 being crash certified by the Japan Automobile Federation, mandatory HANS use and other safety guidelines are strictly followed by Tuason Racing, in cooperation with AAP and CIS, for every event.

With Brown out for the weekend, Red Diwa claimed all three top finishes in his category to inch past the AEG-Toyota driver’s lead and claim the AM class championship.

In the Pro Class, the highlight of the 2019 season happened in Race 8. After trading paint with his rival in a daring inside pass with no room for error, Estefano Rivera crossed the finish line side-by-side with Ryo Yamada to give Team Obengers the lead heading into the final Race 9. With mathematical progression assured–even if a flying Yamada won–Rivera took the car home safely in second and won the Pro Class, the overall championship, and the chance to race at the legendary Suzuka Circuit in December!

Stefan Ramirez passed Jussi Hoikka on the last lap of a long battle, but the Growl-Thule driver’s points total gave him third place in Pro and overall with a single point! A fitting finish as the middle places also saw a lot of intense competition all season.

In third was Toyota Otis-Obengers composed of the current champ Estefano Rivera, up-and-coming Vios Circuit Challenge racer, John Dizon, and Obengers team manager, Pao Agregado.

Formula V1 Runner-up Ryo Yamada gets his first Formula Masters Testing at Sepang International Circuit

Sepang, Malaysia – Formula V1 PH overall second-place finisher, Ryo Yamada, gained his first Formula Masters testing experience with Eurasia Motorsports at Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia.

The Japanese racer drove a Tatuus chassis with a 185 hp 2.0L Volkswagen engine that comes in a 6-speed Sadev paddle-shift gearbox.

Over the testing, Yamada struggled to adjust to the car generally because of its strong downforce. “FM cars have very high downforce. I struggled to find the limits of the car for the first time. But I think (it is) the best car for learning the modern racing car driving.” said Yamada.

Yamada also noted how different it was driving in Sepang compared to the Philippine tracks. “Sepang has a lot of high speed and long turns. The speed range in all the tracks is higher than the Philippines’ tracks. And Sepang needs more big brakes everywhere in the track.”

Later in the afternoon, rain affected the testing session making the track a slippery challenge for Yamada. Positively, it provided a more complete experience for him as he tested in both wet and dry conditions.

Yamada expressed his gratitude to Tuason Racing and Eurasia Motorsports for the great partnership in bringing Formula V1 drivers to a higher tier of racing.

“I’m very excited to touch the world of high-performance middle formula…This testing must be my advantage in my racing career. Thanks to Tuason Racing and Eurasia Motorsport for giving me such an amazing testing day.”

Road to Suzuka: The Track’s Most Famous Race Ever!

The Japanese Grand Prix usually comes late in the Formula 1 season, and that means many championships have been decided in the land of the rising sun. While F1 made its debut at Fuji Speedway in 1976, it’s been held at Suzuka’s 5.8-kilometer long confines since 1987 (sharing duties with Fuji for a short time in the 2000s) and is one of the formula series’ oldest active tracks.

It’s also a favorite of fans and drivers alike because of its challenging turns, overall high-speed, and rare figure-eight layout in which the track loops over itself with the use of an overpass! It also didn’t take long for Suzuka to cement itself in F1 memory as the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix saw one of the most famous rivalries of all time be decided in controversial circumstances. Here’s the official recap from Formula 1’s YouTube channel:

When Giti-Formula V1 Challenge champion Estefano Rivera takes to the track this weekend, he’ll be driving the same tarmac as countless legends! He’s been busy practicing on his simulator, but we have a feeling he’s watched many on-board videos too–just like former V1 driver, Daniel Miranda’s race when he received a special invite to Suzuka earlier this year too!
